Guide for players and families

Mental preparation for young footballers

Simple habits to train the head as well as the legs.

Two players with the same talent do not always go as far. Often the difference is in the head: how they handle a mistake, pressure or a bad week. Mental preparation is trained, like technique.

Six habits that work

  • Clear goals: one for the season and one for each week, written down.
  • Routines: the same warm-up and preparation before every match.
  • Reset after a mistake: a short gesture or word to focus on the next action.
  • Sleep and food: tired players make worse decisions.
  • Watch your own video: what went well and one thing to improve.
  • Talk: with the coach, the team and the family. Nobody improves alone.

Living away from home

For a young player abroad, homesickness, a new language and a new team are part of the challenge. A daily routine, regular calls home and adults who are close make a big difference. At TNGS the staff is with the players every day and we talk to the families regularly.

Frequently asked questions

Does mental preparation really change performance?

It helps players stay focused, recover from mistakes and handle pressure. It does not replace training, but it makes training and matches more useful.

What if a player feels anxious or sad?

Talk about it early with the family and the staff. If it lasts or gets worse, a professional (psychologist or doctor) should help.
